The Threat

Understand the danger and how this scam puts your personal information at risk

What is Ghost Pairing?

A scam that exploits WhatsApp's "Linked Devices" feature to connect a hacker's computer to your WhatsApp account without your knowledge.

The Risk

Complete access to all your messages, photos, videos, and contacts. Hackers can impersonate you and send messages to your contacts.

Silent Attack

Your phone works normally, but a hacker has full access. You won't know you've been compromised until it's too late.

How the Scam Works

Understanding the attack chain helps you recognize and avoid it

1

The Bait: Fake Message

You receive a message from someone you know (or think you know) saying: "Hey, I found your photo!" or "Look at this" with a suspicious link.

2

The Trap: Fake Login Page

Clicking the link opens a professional-looking fake website asking you to "verify" your identity by entering your phone number and password.

3

The Code: Pairing Code Sent

When you enter your number, a legitimate WhatsApp pairing code is sent to your actual phone. Meanwhile, the hacker uses your number on WhatsApp Web.

4

The Hack: Code Transferred

You're tricked into entering the pairing code on the fake website. This code links the hacker's computer to your WhatsApp account permanently.

5

The Consequence: Full Access

The hacker now has complete access to your WhatsApp. They can read all messages, view photos/videos, and send messages from your account—all while your phone works normally.

How to Protect Yourself

Essential steps to keep your WhatsApp account secure

Never Click Unknown Links

If a message from a known contact seems suspicious or asks you to click a link to "verify" or "see a photo," don't click it. Contact them directly to confirm.

Never Share Pairing Codes

WhatsApp will never ask for a pairing code via a website or message. If you see a code on your phone, it's for WhatsApp Web only—never share it with anyone.

Check Linked Devices

Regularly check WhatsApp Settings → Linked Devices to see if any unknown computers are connected to your account. Disconnect any you don't recognize.

Enable Two-Step Verification

Go to Settings → Account → Two-Step Verification and enable it. This adds an extra layer of security to your account.

Warning Signs

If you notice these signs, your account may have been compromised

Contacts report receiving messages from you that you didn't send

You see unknown devices in Linked Devices section

Your messages appear in your chat but you don't remember sending them

You receive a WhatsApp Web login notification you didn't initiate

If You've Been Hacked

Immediate steps to take if you suspect your account is compromised

Disconnect all linked devices: Go to Settings → Linked Devices and disconnect all unknown devices immediately.

Change your password: Update your WhatsApp account password and any other accounts that may have been compromised.

Alert your contacts: Inform your contacts that your account was compromised and to be cautious of any messages from you.
